Born to Ramble

I wonder if young male black bears like the Allman Brothers? Well, certainly then Wood Guthrie. Fantasies aside they don't like any music and would be more repelled by a free live show of Bob Dylan than attracted.

But, young male black bears were born to ramble. June is the season for young boars to light out for new territories, unspoken for females, and who knows else what. And this June brought a bounty of attention for one bear among the corn and bean fields of eastern Iowa.

Maybe too much attention. The bear in question was so visible that he attracted a parade like following. It's hard to fault folks for wanting to get a glimpse, but it's reckless and selfish to get too close.

A conservation officer hoped that the good people of Scott County would give the bear a break. If not, then the bear might find itself up for state sanctioned destruction. A link to the story here.

No news yet on additional sightings of this animal. Here's hoping he safely finds his way north.
