The Badger State bear population continues to amaze.
The Wisc DNR has new zones for black bear management. Now, two of these zones border Iowa, "E" and "F". It wasn't that long ago that there were four management zones in Wisconsin, now there are six.
Last year almost 120,000 applied for a hunting permit, about 11,000 permits were available. I'm old enough to remember the year there was a closed season on account of desperately low numbers of bears.
Wisconsin gives me hope for Iowa. With management under the North American Model, we could have a sustainable population of bears and co-exist with existing economic practices. It wouldn't take faith, just courage.
